Success By 6 is a United Way of the Lowcountry, Inc. initiative that brings our community together to ensure that children from birth to age six are nurtured and cared for and prepared to succeed when they enter school.

As members of this community, we should know that in Beaufort County:

  • 20.1% of children live in poverty
  • 4.7% of all babies are born to mothers under the age of 18
  • 92.1% of those mothers are not married
  • 14.5% of children enter school unprepared to learn and succeed

Success By 6 Community Partners:

Success by 6 builds collaborations between agencies and service providers which ensure cooperation and sharing information to avoid duplication of efforts, and encourage communications between families and service providers so that families are better able to help their children.

Success By 6 Partnerships:

The Parents As Teachers program of the Beaufort County School District sends trained Parent Educators into the homes of disadvantaged families living anywhere in Beaufort County to teach parenting skills and provide information on needed services.

Family Learning Centers at Lady’s Island Middle School and Hilton Head Island Elementary School offer parents and families, daycare providers and preschool teachers lending resource libraries, parenting workshops, training classes for childcare providers, family literacy instruction, and a "drop-in" location where they may discuss their concerns and improve their skills and knowledge on early childcare. Health and safety education are also available.

The Family Literacy Program on Hilton Head Island offers 3 and 4 year-old children preschool classes while their parents learn English from Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry, receive information on parenting skills and ways to reinforce what their children are learning.

At Davis Elementary School one hundred children and their families participate in the Sheldon Project, where reading skills, health care, recreation, literacy and parent education are addressed.

Healthy Families America helps parents get their children off to a healthy start.

  • Mothers of newborns at Beaufort Memorial Hospital and Hilton Head Medical Center and Clinics are offered information and access to health services, and parenting education opportunities.
  • When families of newborns have more intensive needs, trained home visitors provide a comprehensive network of support, including intervention when necessary.

As you can see, Success by 6 is the conduit between concerned organizations, agencies and people involved with preschool children and their families. Helping all children succeed for life is our goal.
